In starlight sweet I kissed the face
That sang across the shores
A thousand songs of time and place
And heartbreak heretofore

It was a start that knew no end
Let’s not pretend it was your fault
As time slipped through my helpless palms
Like woeful, insufficient alms
I know my place, you want your space
We could have had it all

Your heart was deeper once than mine
When we threw away the key
It clinked, descending in the well
Where your eyes looked back at me
My palpitating heart knells
Like a tolling from beyond
Where wings ascend on memory
Where poets’ hearts are fond

We sing twin songs outside of time
Soon mind and soul transcend
The jester’s effervescent rhyme
And love portends we make amends
